| 143 교황은 정말로 오류를 범할 수 없나요?
그렇습니다. 그러나 교황은 오로지 장엄한 교회 의식을 통해 교의를 선포할 때 ex cathedra에만, 다시 말해 신앙과 도덕적 가르침에 있어 구속력 있는 결정을 선포할 때만 무류성을 지닙니다. 공의회의 결정과 같이 주교단이 교황과 하나가 되어 내리는 교도권적인 결정들도 무류성을 지닙니다. 888-892 교황의 무류성은, 그가 도덕적으로 결함이 없다거나 그의 지적 능력이 완벽하다는 것을 뜻하는 것이 아닙니다. 본래 오류를 범할 수 없는 존재는 교회입니다. 예수님이 교회의 성령을 약속하셨고, 성령은 교회를 진리 안에 머물게 하시며 점점 더 깊이 진리 속으로 이끌고 계시기 때문입니다. 자명한 신앙 진리를 갑작스레 부정하거나 잘못 해석하는 경우 교회는 무엇이 진실되고 무엇이 그릇된 것인지를 구속력 있게 선언하는 최종 결정권을 가져야 합니다. 이것이 바로 교황이 지닌 결정권입니다. 교황은 베드로 사도의 후계자요 주교들 가운데 으뜸으로서, 논란이 되는 진리를 교회의 신앙 전통에 비추어 정식화할 권한을 가집니다. 그것을 통해 교황은 신자들이 그 진리를 ‘영원히 확실하게 믿도록’ 합니다. 이를 가리켜 ‘교황이 교의를 선포한다’고 합니다. 그런 까닭에 교의는 결코 ‘새로운 내용’을 담을 수 없으며, 매우 드물게 선포됩니다. 가장 최근에 선포된 교의는 1950년에 나온 ‘성모 승천’에 관한 것입니다. 143 Is the Pope really infallible? Yes. But the →POPE speaks infallibly only when he defines a dogma in a solemn ecclesiastical act (“ex cathedra”), in other words, makes an authoritative decision in doctrinal questions of faith and morals. What is infallible is actually the Church, for Jesus promised her the Holy Spirit, who keeps her in the truth and leads her ever deeper into it. When a truth of the faith that has been taken for granted is suddenly denied or misinterpreted, the Church must have one final voice that authoritatively says what is true and what is false. This is the voice of the Pope. As the successor of Peter and the first among the bishops, he has the authority to formulate the disputed truth according to the Church’s Tradition of faith in such a way that it is presented to the faithful for all times as something “to be believed with certainty”. We say then that the Pope defines a dogma. Therefore such a dogma can never contain something substantially “new”. Very rarely is a dogma defined. Bishops have responsibility for the local Church that is entrusted to them and a share in the responsibility for the whole →CHURCH. They exercise their authority in commwith one another and for the benefit of the whole Church under the leadership of the →POPE. 886-887, 893-896, 938-939 Bishops must first of all be →APOSTLES?faithful witnesses of Jesus, who personally called them to follow him and then sent them. So they bring Christ to mankind and mankind to Christ. This happens through their preaching, the celebration of the sacraments, and their governance of the →CHURCH. As a successor of the apostles, a bishop exercises his ministry by virtue of his own apostolic authority he is not an agent or a sort of assistant to the Pope. Yet he acts with and under the Pope. |
