| 158 하늘나라의 본질은 무엇인가요?
하늘나라는 사랑의 순간이 끊임없이 이어지는 상태라 할 수 있습니다. 그곳에서는 우리 영혼이 사랑하면서 평생 찾았던 하느님으로부터 우리를 떼어놓을 수 있는 것이 더는 아무것도 없습니다. 또한 우리는 모든 천사와 성인들과 함께 하느님에 대해, 그리고 하느님과 더불어 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 1023-1026, 1053 사랑스러운 눈길로 서로를 바라보는 연인이나, 엄마의 미소를 영원히 간직하려는 듯이 엄마와 눈을 맞추는 아기를 보면 하늘나라가 어떤 것인지 어렴풋이 알게 됩니다. 하느님과 얼굴을 마주하고 바라볼 수 있다는 것은 사랑의 순간만이 영원히 계속되고 있다는 것을 의미합니다. 158 What is heaven? Heaven is the endless moment of love. Nothing more separates us from God, whom our soul loves and has sought our whole life long. Together with all the angels and saints we will be able to rejoice forever in and with God. 1023-1026, 1053 If you have ever observed a couple looking at each other lovingly or seen a baby nursing who looks for his mother’s eyes as though it wanted to store up every smile forever, then you have some inkling of heaven. To be able to see God face to face?that is like one, single, never-ending moment of love. 159 연옥이란 무엇인가요? 연옥은 종종 어떤 장소로 오인되기도 하지만, 그보다는 오히려 어떤 상태를 의미합니다. 하느님의 은총 속에, 다시 말해 하느님이나 주위 사람들과 평화로운 관계 속에서 죽음을 맞이한 사람이라도 하느님의 얼굴을 뵈기 위해서는 먼저 정화의 시간이 필요한데, 그것이 바로 연옥입니다. 1030-1031 베드로가 예수님을 모른다고 했을 때 주님은 몸을 돌려 그를 바라보셨습니다. 그러자 베드로는 “밖으로 나가 슬피 울었습니다.”(루카 22,62 참조) 연옥의 느낌은 이와 같을 것입니다. 아마도 우리 대부분은 죽음을 맞이하는 순간 연옥을 겪게 될 것입니다. 주님은 사랑에 가득 찬 눈길로 우리를 바라보실 텐데, 우리는 자신의 악한 행실이나 “단순히” 사랑을 담지 않고 한 행동에 대해 얼굴이 화끈거리는 부끄러움과 뼈아픈 후회를 느끼게 될 것입니다. 이처럼 우리는 정화의 고통을 겪은 이후에야 비로소 사랑이 넘치는 그분의 시선을 천상의 순수한 기쁨 속에서 마주 볼 수 있게 될 것입니다. 159 What is purgatory? Purgatory, often imagined as a place, is actually a condition. Someone who dies in God’s grace (and therefore at peace with God and men) but who still needs purification before he can see God face to face is in purgatory. 1030-1031 When Peter had betrayed Jesus, the Lord turned around and looked at Peter: “And Peter went out and wept bitterly”?a feeling like being in purgatory. Just such a purgatory probably awaits most of us at the moment of our death: the Lord looks at us full of love?and we experience burning shame and painful remorse over our wicked or “merely” unloving behavior. Only after this purifying pain will we be capable of meeting his loving gaze in untroubled heavenly joy. |
