| 287 진정한 ‘자유’란 악을 선택할 수도 있는 것을 의미하는 것은 아닌가요?
악은 그저 추구할 만한 가치가 있거나 그것을 선택하면 자유로워질 것처럼 보일 뿐입니다. 그러나 악은 우리를 불행하게 만들며, 우리에게서 참된 선을 빼앗아 갑니다. 악은 쓸모없는 일에 우리를 옭아매서 결국 우리의 온전한 자유를 깨뜨립니다. 1730-1733, 1743-1744 이를 우리는 병적 욕망에서 확인할 수 있습니다. 병적 욕망을 지닌 사람은 자신에게 좋아 보이는 일에 자유를 팝니다. 사실상 그는 그 일의 노예가 되는 것입니다. 인간은 선하고 옳은 일에 동의하고 그것을 선택하여 행할 때나 어떠한 병적 욕망과 강박감, 습관에도 방해받지 않을 때 비로소 가장 자유로워집니다. 선을 선택하는 것은 늘 하느님에게 향하는 길을 선택하는 것입니다. 287 But doesn’t “freedom” consist of being able to choose evil as well? Evil is only apparently worth striving for, and deciding in favor of evil only apparently makes us free. Evil does not make us happy but rather deprives us of what is truly good it chains us to something futile and in the end destroys our freedom entirely. 1730-1733, 1743-1744 We see this in addiction: Here a person sells his freedom to something that appears good to him. In reality he becomes a slave. Man is freest when he is always able to say Yes to the good when no addiction, no compulsion, no habit prevents him from choosing and doing what is right and good. A decision in favor of the good is always a decision leading toward God. 288 인간은 자기가 행한 모든 일에 대해 책임이 있나요? 인간은 의식이 뚜렷한 상태에서 자유 의지로 행한 모든 일에 대해 책임이 있습니다. 1734-1737, 1745-1746 강압, 공포, 무지, 환각 상태, 나쁜 습관의 영향을 받아 행한 일에 대해 누구도 전적으로 책임질 수는 없습니다. 선에 대해 더 많이 알고 선행을 익힐수록 인간은 죄의 종살이에서 점점 더 벗어나게 됩니다(로마 6,17 1코린 7,22 참조). 하느님은 자기 자신과 주변 세계(환경), 나아가 온 세상에 대해 책임질 수 있는 자유로운 사람들을 원하십니다. 그러나 자유롭지 못한 사람들도 하느님의 자비로운 사랑을 받고 있으며, 하느님은 매일같이 그들에게 자유롭게 해방될 수 있는 기회를 제공하십니다. 288 Is man responsible for everything he does? Man is responsible for everything he does consciously and voluntarily. 1734-1737, 1745-1746 No one can be held (fully) responsible for something he did under coercion, out of fear, ignorance, under the influence of drugs or the power of bad habits. The more a person knows about the good and practices the good, the more he moves away from the slavery of sin (Rom 6:17 1 Cor 7:22). God desires that such free persons should (be able to) take responsibility for themselves, for their environment, and for the whole earth. But all of God’s merciful love is also for those who are not free every day he offers them an opportunity to allow themselves to be set free for freedom. 289 인간이 악을 선택하더라도 그에게 자유 의지를 허락해야 하나요? 인간은 인간의 존엄성에 근거한 기본 권리에 따라 자유를 행사할 수 있습니다. 개인의 자유는 다른 이들의 자유가 침해되는 경우에만 제약을 받을 수 있습니다. 1738, 1740 비록 그릇된 일이라 해도 그것을 선택할 자유가 없다면 진정한 자유라 할 수 없습니다. 인간의 자유를 존중하지 않는 것은 인간의 존엄성을 해치는 일입니다. 국가가 수행해야 할 중요한 과제 가운데 하나는 종교·집회·결사·표현·직업의 자유와 같은 국민의 기본권을 보호하는 일입니다. 그러나 한 사람의 자유는 다른 사람의 자유를 제한합니다. 289 Must we allow a person to use his free will, even when he decides in favor of evil? For a person to be able to use his freedom is a fundamental right based on his human dignity. An individual’s freedom can be curtailed only if the exercise of his freedom is detrimental to the freedom of others. 1738, 1740 Freedom would be no freedom at all if it were not the freedom to choose even what is wrong. It would violate the dignity of a man if we did not respect his freedom. One of the central duties of the State is to protect the liberties of all its citizens (freedom of religion, of assembly, and association, freedom of opinion, freedom to choose one’s occupation, and so on). The freedom of one citizen is the limit to the freedom of another. |
